Lawn fungus is a very common, potentially devastating problem threatening your lawn. In fact, many lawn diseases begin as a result of fungus infestation. Gro-Masters has been a trusted lawn care service in Savanannah, GA for over 20 years. We have prepared this article to help Savannah, home owners better understand their lawns and what affects them.
Typically, lawn fungus is caused by unaerated soil, over-watering and/or under or over fertilizing. But one of the most common contributors to lawn fungus is humidity and high temperatures, which pretty much characterizes the climate in Savannah, Georgia. Here are some signs to look for:
The Dreaded Brown Spots
One of the most common signs that you’ve got fungus on your lawn is brown spots. These brown spots can start small, but can become widespread, as they can grow together to close the gap of green. This is especially common in warm, moist environments, as of course is the case in our tepid Savannah, Georgia climate.
Initially, the brown spot looks almost like a doughnut, with a ring of varying sides of brown, depending on the lawn and environmental conditions, with a patch of green in the middle. This is because the area in the middle of the patch can recover, so it retains its green color.
Dollar Spots
Dollar spots are similar to brown spots, but they appear in a pattern of small round circles, about the size of a silver dollar.
Fairy Ring Fungi
Fairy ring fungi appear with areas of dark green grass or dying grass in circular or arc shapes, and vary widely in size. You may even see mushrooms growing in these patches.
Discoloration
If you take a good look at individual blades of grass you may notice brown or purple stripes or the blades may look as though they have a powdery or chalky dust on them. Another sign of the presence of fungus is if the blades of grass turn black and split.
Snow mold
In spring time, if you see white or gray spots on your lawn, you may have snow mold. This is a special kind of fungus that requires colder temperatures to flourish. These are more common in Northern Georgia, but they can exist from time to time in Savannah and surrounding area, depending on the severity of the weather
Red threads
Most often caused by excessive moisture, this type of fungus appears initially as red threads, intermingling with the green grass on your lawn. The bright red will eventually fade to brown, or a blanched appearance. These patches may appear to have a pinkish hue as well.
The good news is that if you can identify a problem before it gets out of hand, you can really mitigate the damage. When you determine the source of the fungus as well, you can work towards preventing a reoccurrence.
