Move over man-caves! The hottest new addition to your home can be found in your backyard: the pub shed.
A pub shed is exactly what it sounds like: a regular, run-of-the-mill garden shed which has been hooked up and transformed into a pub – perfect for serving up a pint to friends and family on a gorgeous evening.
Here’s what you need to build a pub shed that will make you the envy of your neighborhood and have your neighbors banging down your back gate to share a glass with you.
A Garden Shed
A standard garden shed will do and the depth and width aren’t as important as the height – make sure that your bartender can easily stand up inside of it. We love this one from Home Depot for $999, but if you’re handy with a saw and hammer you could easily build your own custom shed for much less if you buy your own material.
A Bar
The bar can be as simple as particle board and some spare lumber, or you can buy a pre-made one and install it yourself. We love this teak one from Home Depot, which comes with two stools.
Barstools
Your “patrons” will obviously need somewhere to sit in your bar, and you can make or use stools out of pretty much everything. There are some great options from IKEA, which we love, but you can use whatever suits your fancy – as long as it’s comfortable to sit on!
Lighting
Save yourself the hassle of having to wire up electricity to your shed and string a few rows of simple string lights or Christmas lights. Just drag an extension cord over to the shed, plug the lights in and you’re good to go!
Alcohol
Since this is a pub shed, alcohol is non-negotiable. The best part? You get to pick what you serve, and your favorite drinks are always available!
A Tip Jar
This goes without saying! Make sure your customers reward you for all your hard work by placing a tip jar in plain sight. This can be as simple as a mason jar with the word “tips” on a piece of paper taped to it, or you can go buy a fancier one, if you’d like.
A Name
Every good pub worth its salt has a name, which means your “local” pub should have one, as well! Be creative and see if you can come up with a play on words that references your surname, neighborhood, or even your favorite sports team.
Those are the basics of what you need to build a pub shed that will make your backyard the envy of the neighborhood, but why stop there? You can add neon signs, bar clocks, special glasses… whatever you’d like. The sky’s the limit!
